BlueJ: What do they do?

The project focused on combining Thomson Reuters’ vast database of authoritative legal knowledge with BlueJ’s AI-driven predictive insights. Our role was to ensure that this powerful combination was delivered through an interface that is intuitive, efficient, and easy to adopt for professionals who work under time-sensitive conditions.

We aligned on building a platform that could truly transform how legal professionals work. Our vision was to simplify complex research and compliance tasks while ensuring the product scaled seamlessly for both SMEs and enterprises. The focus was on blending AI-driven insights with user-friendly design to create real value.

Problem statement

Legal research and compliance are often time-consuming and fragmented processes. Professionals deal with large volumes of tax legislation, precedents, and documentation spread across multiple systems.

Key challenges included:

Collaboration Gaps: Teams often worked in silos, with little support for shared work or version control.

Overwhelming Information: Legal professionals had to sift through lengthy documents to find relevant insights.

Inefficient Workflows: Traditional tools lacked guided flows, forcing users to navigate complex tax scenarios manually.

Low Usability: Existing platforms were cluttered and unintuitive, creating a steep learning curve.

Our Role

Our team worked closely with stakeholders at Thomson Reuters and BlueJ to design the platform. The responsibilities included:

Running usability testing sessions to validate the design.

Conducting stakeholder interviews and user research with tax professionals.

Creating wireframes and information architecture for the application.

Designing high-fidelity UI screens that adhered to Thomson Reuters’ brand identity.

Building a scalable design system for consistency across modules.

Research & Insights

The discovery phase involved understanding the needs of tax professionals, researchers, and compliance officers. Through interviews and workflow observations, we uncovered the following insights:

Collaboration: Team members needed features like shared workspaces, notes, and report generation.

Dashboard Preference: Users preferred a dashboard that surfaced frequently used tools and case summaries rather than overwhelming them with menus.

Guided Flows Needed: Many professionals wanted step-by-step guidance when exploring case laws or compliance scenarios.

Search Efficiency: Search was a critical feature, but users demanded smarter filtering and categorization.

During our research sessions, emphasized the importance of deeply understanding user pain points. Together, we uncovered a strong demand for guided workflows, smarter search, and collaboration features that existing tools lacked. These insights shaped our strategy to design a modular, dashboard-first platform that reduced complexity and improved adoption.
